RU Society of Physics Students
Hosts Physicist George Brooke Friday

Physicist George Brooke (right) will speak on Friday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. in Reed Hall, room 201. He will talk about his research using the "gas-phase absorption spectroscopy" method.

Brooke sends laser light through various materials that have been changed into their gaseous form. The gas absorbs specific light wavelengths depending upon their atomic or molecular structure. He will describe the process of changing materials into their gaseous forms, along with the physics involved in the light absorption process.

Guinan Honored by North American Bluebird Society
Radford University biology associate professor and director of RU Environmental Center Judith Guinan was recently awarded the 2008 Research Award from the North American Bluebird Society for her species account of the Western Bluebird. Her account will be published in the book and online series Birds of North America.

To produce the account, Guinan reviewed every published scholarly article and book about Western Bluebirds that she could locate. Using these sources, she incorporated information about the origins, natural history, ecology and behavior of Western Bluebirds into a comprehensive account of our current knowledge about the species. The revised version incorporates information from more than 90 other publications on Western Bluebirds.
