Wawrzycka Participates in Prestigious
James Joyce Conference in Rome

English professor Jolanta Wawrzycka was one of five international scholars invited to participate in the First Graduate James Joyce Conference in Rome on Feb. 1 - 2, coinciding with Joyce's birthday. Numerous prominent Joyce scholars, including noted author Umberto Eco, participated in the two-day conference aimed at educating young literary scholars about the complexities of the works of the Dublin native, who penned Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.

Jolanta WawrzyckaThe James Joyce Italian Foundation organized the conference in collaboration with the Department of Comparative Literature of the University of Rome Three and with support from the Irish Embassy in Rome and the Italian President.

Students from universities in Italy, Iran, France, Germany and the U.S. attended the conference. Wawrzycka was a respondent on a panel devoted to Joyce and translation. "Although I attend Joyce conferences regularly, this event was special because it focused solely on graduate students. I was impressed with the level of scholarship represented by the young scholars. I have high hopes for some of my own Joyce seminar students, and I'd like to bring one of them to Rome next year." Wawrzycka is the editor of Gender in Joyce and the author of numerous book chapters on multilingual translations of Joyce, her most recent work appearing in the Fall 2007 issue of Italian Joyce Studies.
