Paula Stanley's Passing Leaves Void in RU Community Paula Stanley, director of RU's Faculty Development Center and a professor of counselor education, was content staying in the background and serving the university without fanfare. But ask any of her colleagues and students she was at the forefront of education and was very much ahead of her time when she began promoting invitational learning. An 18-year employee of RU, she passed away unexpectedly last week after complications related to a battle with cancer. Read more>>

Radford Board of Visitors Concludes November Meeting
The Radford University Board of Visitors formally adopted the university's $156.6 million operating budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year during its November 11-12 meeting.
The budget reflects the university's strategy for coping with the latest round of state-ordered budget cuts. The budget represents a $6.5 million or four percent decrease over the 2008-2009 operating budget. Members of the board praised university officials for preparing a budget that maintains the integrity of the university's academic programs, positions it for success once the economic downturn ends, and minimizes the number of layoffs that will be required. Work Begins on RU's Website Upgrade Radford University's website will get an upgrade over the next year with the assistance of Digital Wave Technologies, Inc., a Philadelphia-based company that specializes in website design for colleges and universities. The project kick-off and discovery phase of the project is set to get underway in early December, according to Danny Kemp, RU's Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Global Innovation Tournament Winners Announced Top overall prizes of $500 were awarded to two videos produced by RU students at the 2009 Global Innovation Tournament Showcase Luncheon, hosted by the Radford University College of Business and Economics (COBE) and sponsored by SunTrust on Wednesday at the Muse Banquet Hall. COBE Inducts Top Students into Prestigious Business Society
Twenty RU students received one of the highest honors Radford University's College of Business and Economics (COBE) can bestow at the Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Induction ceremony held on November 10 in the Muse Banquet Room. "It is a special evening when the faculty, parents and staff can mark the academic achievements of our students and welcome them to this prestigious international society for business excellence," said Faye Gilbert, COBE dean and president of the Radford University BGS chapter. "BGS' global network and quest to align business and social objectives are hallmarks of the culture in our college."
More than 50 RU faculty and guests and family of the inductees attended the ceremony which featured welcoming remarks by RU President Penelope W. Kyle, a William and Mary Chapter member of Beta Gamma Sigma, and a presentation by 2009 BGS Faculty Inductee Dr. Bruce Chase, professor of accounting, finance and business law. Professors Give Presentation at Notre Dame Ethics Conference
School of Communication professor Gwen Brown and political science professor Matthew Franck recently participated at an annual ethics and culture conference at the University of Notre Dame and presented "Apologia for an Honor: President Obama Gives an Account of Himself." The professors delivered their presentation at the Tenth Annual Conference of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture: "The Summons of Freedom: Virtue, Sacrifice, and the Common Good."
Brown's and Franck's presentation was part of a panel discussion concerning the controversial decision by Notre Dame to present President Barack Obama with an honorary doctorate when the president delivered the university's commencement address in May. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Carilion NRV Medical Center President Discusses Health Care
and Competition with COBE Faculty and Students
Don Halliwill, President, New River Valley Medical Center, provided some perspective on the policy and legislative issues involved in today's health care debate to students and faculty in RU's College of Business and Economics (COBE) on Monday. "The country has to decide if health care is an entitlement," said Halliwill. "And whatever decision the country makes will have stark consequences." An 18-year veteran of the health care industry and Carilion, Halliwill spoke to two upper-level business classes and met with the COBE faculty for a series of discussions on health care reform and competition in the health care industry. RU Theatre Presents Liza and the Riddling Cave
RU School of Dance and Theatre will present Liza and the Riddling Cave at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Pridemore Playhouse in Porterfield Hall. The play, written by John Urquhart, tells the story of a young Appalachian girl, Liza, who hasn't spoken a word in her life but has a remarkable talent for solving riddles. When Liza's father goes missing in the mysterious caves of Ice Mountain, she knows it is her job to bring him home. The play follows the adventures of Liza and her brother Jacob through the mountains to save their father. Liza and the Riddling Cave is being directed by Deejay Gray, a senior theatre major.
Tonight Marks Final Performance of Revamped Nutcracker
Cracked: A Revamped Nutcracker For A Sinful Society will be presented at 8 p.m. tonight at the Albig Studio Theater in Peters Hall. The performance is co-directed by seniors Stacey Fernandez and Juliana Utz as their final capstone project for the Honors Academy. Fernandez and Utz have rewritten the classic tale, The Nutcracker, and transformed it into a contemporary evening-length dance production. The cast consists of Radford University dance majors. Museum Hosts Lecture by Geologist Elizabeth McClellan
RU Geologist Elizabeth McClellan will present "The Secret Life of Garnets, and Other Mineralogical Tales" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at in the Hurlburt Hall Auditorium. With the advance of new techniques, geologists are continually looking at rocks and minerals at finer scales. What can the microscopic view of a garnet crystal tell us about big-picture plate tectonic events? What can a tiny zircon crystal tell us about ancient volcanic landscapes, or the earliest history of planet Earth? Come hear about these and other examples of reading Earth history through minerals.
Geography Professor Invited to Speak at University in Brazil
Geography associate professor Gichana Manyara will present at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, Brazil during the "II Workshop on Physical Geography of Northeast Brazil" from Nov. 24-27. The Conference Board will finance Manyara's travel and accommodation expenses. "The geography program has an exchange agreement with UFPE," says Bernd Kuennecke, director of the School of Environmental and Physical Science. "We have hosted UFPE faculty and students. For example, Antonio Correra, a professor of geography at Pernambuco, earned his undergraduate degree from Radford University," says Kuennecke.

Radford Athletics Update Seniors Art Parakhouski and Joey Lynch-Flohr registered double-doubles together for the fourth consecutive game and RU rolled to a 94-70 win over Lynchburg College at the Dedmon Center Tuesday night. The Highlanders put their nine-game road winning streak, the second-longest in the nation, on the line Saturday when they travel to No. 8 Duke for the first time in school history. RU last met the Blue Devils in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament.
RU men's basketball player Blake Smith is the Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week. In his first game in a Highlander uniform, Smith scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, helping Radford to a 76-65 season-opening win over Navy.
The 2009 Big South Conference volleyball championships begin today at noon in the Dedmon Center. The No. 8 seed Highlanders play at 7:30 p.m. against top-seeded UNC Asheville.
Saturday, the RU women's basketball team will host Mount St. Mary's. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in Dedmon.

Alumnus Helps Soldiers Find Better Nutrition
Sean Magee '86 and two other Radford University alumni are the entrepreneurial forces behind Warrior Nutrition, a sales and distribution company that provides dietary supplements to the military. "Jeff Graves, Kevin Hudson and I are all Marines and we felt it important to give back to those who have sacrificed the most in the name of freedom," Magee said. Read More>>

Chase Published in Journal of Accountancy Bruce Chase, professor of accounting and director of RU's Government and Non-Profit Assistance Center, recently published, "Balancing Governmental Budgets under GASB 54," in the November edition of the Journal of Accountancy. The article outlines a major change in how state and local governments report information in financial statements. Chase co-authored the article with John Montoro, a Richmond-based partner with regional accounting firm Cherry, Bekaert and Holland, L.L.P., which specializes in quality assurance, training and service delivery to local governments, state agencies and related entities.
