Wilder Leads RU Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Doug WilderL. Douglas Wilder, the grandson of slaves who rose to become governor of Virginia, told a rapt RU audience on Jan. 22 that the inauguration of President Barack Obama demands "the need for new dreams."

Wilder delivered the keynote address at Radford University's commemoration of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., in a ceremony filled with symbolism.

RU Students Gain Experience in the Entrepreneurial World
EntrepreneurWith $50 in hand for start-up costs, 25 Radford University students recently set out to execute a business venture. The project was a component of RU's Entrepreneurship and Innovation class, which is part of a non-business entrepreneurship minor that provides students with the complementary skill sets needed to effectively create and manage business opportunities associated with their primary discipline. Entrepreneurial-minded students will also have the opportunity to receive lessons from one of the nation's largest financial holding companies when SunTrust donates 100 textbooks for use in two RU College of Business and Economics courses. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

Celebrated Coach Herman Boone to Speak at RU Feb. 3
Motivational speaker and retired football coach Herman Boone, whose life story inspired the hit Disney movie "Remember the Titans," will speak at 7 p.m. at Radford University's Bondurant Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

RU Hosts Protocol Dinner Feb. 10
In today's tough economic times, interviews -- as well as jobs -- have become more competitive than ever for college graduates. Having an edge to succeed is essential, and Radford University students have the opportunity to gain that lead with the RU 2009 Protocol Dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Bloodmobile on Campus
The RU Bloodmobile will be on campus Friday, Jan. 30, and Tuesday, Feb. 3-Thursday, Feb. 5. On Jan. 30 and Feb. 3, the Bloodmobile will accept donors from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Fairfax Street. On Feb. 4, only Muse Hall residents will be asked to make a donation from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Muse Penthouse. On Feb. 5, everyone is invited to donate blood from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation on Downey Street. RU Wins National Award for Sustainability Efforts
RU Green logoRU has won a national award for its sustainability efforts toward making the university among the greenest campuses in the Commonwealth. GQ Upcycles!, sponsored by the university's Governor's Quad residential halls, was named the National Educational Program for the month of December 2008 by The National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. The project taught quad residents how to recycle what would normally be useless or outdated objects and make them creative gifts.

Radford Athletics Update
Coming off a 14-2-6 record and a Big South Championship, the Radford women's soccer team has been awarded its most VaSID All-State honors in school history, including coach of the year accolades for Ben Sohrabi. Along with coach of the year, Radford earned two first team and two second team selections. For more, see the Sports Information Press Release.

The men's basketball team picked up a key road win last Saturday, downing the Liberty Flames in double overtime at the Vines Center to improve to 7-2 in Big South play. The Highlanders now face two more tough road games as they head to Gardner-Webb Saturday and then on to Winthrop Monday. They'll be back in the Dedmon Center Sat., Feb. 7, for a game with Presbyterian.

The women's basketball team resumed play in the friendly confines of the Dedmon Center with back-to-back wins over league rivals Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. The Highlanders have now won three straight games and four of their last five competitions. They are now 5-2 and in third place in the conference. Next up for the Highlanders is a game at Liberty Monday night.

Sophomore field hockey player Becca Devlin of Annapolis, Md., is fulfilling her dream of traveling to Israel this summer. Devlin will compete in the Maccabiah Games, a two-week sporting competition similar to the Olympics and considered to be one the largest sporting events in the world.

RU Grads Appear in New Movies, TV Shows
Mays and RatcliffeRU graduate Jayma Mays '00 is now appearing in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which has been the top movie at the box office two weeks in a row. Mays (pictured top right) will also be appearing in "Glee," a new show coming out later this year on Fox. Mays will play a high school guidance counselor.

Another RU graduate, Barry Ratcliffe '85, is set to appear in "Memphis Rising -- Elvis Returns." The movie, produced by Blue Water Films and GTM, LLC, premieres Feb. 12 at the Beverly Hills Music Hall Theatre. Ratcliffe (pictured bottom right) has appeared in numerous movies and television shows, including "America’s Most Wanted," "Untold Stories of the ER," and "Nip/Tuck."

Professor Selected to Assist in Cold Cases
RU professor Donna Boyd has been selected by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science to assist in the analysis of Virginia's unidentified cold cases database in hopes of matching human remains to some of the nation's 105,000-plus missing persons. Boyd's work, which began this month, includes analysis of cold cases in Southwest Virginia, retrieval of mitochondrial DNA from human remains and data entry into the National Missing Persons Database. Work on this federally-funded project will continue for the next 18 months.
