RU Hosts Scottish Rite Luncheon
to Celebrate Successful Summer Language Clinic

RU recently hosted a luncheon to thank the Scottish Rite Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite Foundation for their generous support of the annual RU RiteCare Summer Language Clinic and student scholarships.

The 2008 RU RiteCare Summer Language Clinic, held at the Waldron College of Health and Human Services, was devoted to children two to eight years of age diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The clinic provided family-centered intervention as a means of enhancing the children's language and literacy skills. The Scottish Rite scholarships allowed graduate students in the RU speech-language pathology program to work one-on-one with clinic participants. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

Alum Publishes Book by Second Graders
Angela Price, a 2007 graduate of RU's M.S. program in reading, recalls her students' response to the April 16, 2007, shootings at Virginia Tech. “My students had a lot of emotions to share and needed support and reassurance,” she says. On April 17, her students, second graders at Pulaski County's Riverlawn Elementary School, expressed their emotions and thoughts about the tragedy by writing in journals. Price was impressed by their “depth of understanding” and “caring and forgiving attitudes.” Later, in an RU writing class, she learned from a fellow student about the book September 12, written by students after Sept. 11, 2001. Adapting the idea, Price guided her students to write a book called April 17, with the theme that “this scary event happened, but life continues and we know we are safe and loved.”

Price published the book through Nationwide Learning, which donated 33 copies for shooting victims' families and one for Virginia Tech President Charles Steger.

“I think this project gave the students an opportunity to heal,” she says. “The students also felt they were giving something back to Virginia Tech by honoring the victims through their writings.”

InfoTrac Databases Being Replaced
McConnell Library is currently replacing certain InfoTrac databases as a result of a contract change by VIVA, the statewide library consortium. InfoTrac is a library search engine focused on articles. The new databases, from EBSCO, will provide more peer-reviewed full-text journals and significantly more coverage in the areas of business and education. For assistance finding articles and journals, contact the Library Reference Desk at (540) 831-5696 or refdesk@radford.edu.

2001 Graduate Releases First Novel
Joanna Werling McKay, a 2001 interdisciplinary studies graduate, is set to release her first novel this summer, When Plans Change. The book, published by Publish America LLLP, is “a heartwarming story of love discovered and love renewed,” explains the author.

The book took three years for McKay to complete, and she describes it as a work of Christian fiction. “I decided to follow God and write Christian fiction, and it has allowed me to merge the two most important things in my life: my faith and my writing.”
