International ChemEd Conference Comes to RU in August
There are no cockroaches in your chocolate ice cream. More than likely, you never thought of the possibility of insects crawling in your dessert, but Joe Schwarcz says that his experiences as a scientist and a TV and radio personality for more than 20 years have provided him with fascinating insight into the public's perception, and often misconceptions, about science. Schwarcz, the director of McGill University's Office for Science and Society and a popular media personality in Canada, is the keynote speaker at the 2009 International ChemEd Conference at Radford University on August 2-6.
RU chemistry professor Francis Webster, with the help of RU students and alumni, will open ChemEd 2009 with "The Magic of Chemistry," an age-appropriate program focused on fostering a better understanding and appreciation for the role of chemistry in society. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
RU Gains Level II Authority, More Autonomy from State
Radford University has become only the second university in Virginia to be awarded Level II status an achievement that grants RU greater autonomy from the state in day-to-day activities concerning procurement and information technology. The July 8 decision by the state culminates a year of work by the university to receive Level II status, a benchmark created by the 2005 Restructured Higher Education Financial and Administrative Operations Act that extends autonomy in areas such as capital building projects, procurement and personnel.
To qualify for this autonomy and financial incentives, institutions of higher education must commit themselves formally to meeting a series of state policy objectives. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
RU Faculty Receive FEMA Grant to Revise
NRV Hazard Mitigation Plan
Geography professors Bernd Kuennecke, Charles Manyara and geology professor Skip Watts are teaming up with the New River Valley Planning District on a FEMA grant-funded project to revise the multi-jurisdictional New River Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The team of researchers will identify and analyze community vulnerabilities for hazards such as flooding, ice and snow storms, severe thunderstorms, tornados, passing coastal storms, wild fires, landslides and rock falls, dam failures and drought and its associated drinking water issues. "The completion of this project is important so that we are better prepared to deal with potential future natural disasters in this area," Kuennecke, the senior principal investigator for the project, said. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Professor Offers Analysis During Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings
As the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor proceed, RU Political Science Chair Matt Franck is offering his analysis this week on the Bill Bennett radio program and is blogging at http://www.americanprinciplesproject.org. Bennett's program, along with archived interviews with Franck, can be heard at billbennett.townhall.com.
Code Breaking and Mock Crime Scene Investigation among Summer Bridge Courses
Speak the words "breaking secret codes using mathematical techniques," and you're almost certain to have the attention of everyone in the room. That topic is just one of many being taught by Radford University faculty to female high school students this week during Summer Bridge 2009, a week-long academic residential camp hosted by RU's College of Science and Technology. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Restructuring Increases Potential for More Efficient and Enhanced Service
Express debit card system, ID Card production, Door Access/Alarms, Printing Services, Laundry/Linen Services and Vending Services have been moved to the Division of Information Technology in a restructuring that will result in more efficient and enhanced services to the university. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Nicole Eastep Receives Rogers Research Award
Sophomore biology major Nicole Eastep recently was awarded the Rogers Undergraduate Research Award by the College of Science and Technology scholarship and award committee.
The 2009 Rogers Undergraduate Research Award for the CSAT funds an outstanding undergraduate research project conducted during the spring and summer of 2009 and completed during the 2009-2010 academic year. Under the mentorship of biology faculty Justin Anderson, Eastep will characterize bacteria that break down chitin in mosquitoes. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Time-Travel Book Takes Young Readers to Civil War Battlefields
Stonewall Hinkleman and the Battle of Bull Run, the story of a "smart aleck" teenager whose parents spend their weekends as re-enactors on historic Civil War battlefields, has been released by Michael Hemphill, interim director of Radford University's University Relations Office, and former newspaper colleague Tom Angleberger. The book, published by Penguin Group, is part of the series Dial Books for Young Readers. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
RU To Host 15th Annual Scottish Rite Luncheon
Radford University will host a luncheon July 29, from noon to 2 p.m., in Muse Banquet Hall as a thank-you celebration for the Scottish Rite Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite Foundation for their support of the annual RU RiteCare Summer Language Clinic and student scholarships.
The theme is "Reading Smiles" which captures the three elements of this year's program books, friendship and humor. This year's book list includes three humorous titles The Napping House, Little Pea, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The children will engage in play and social activities as they explore these books together. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
RU Sustainability
Radford University will be featured in an upcoming issue of Green Business Quarterly, a magazine that bills itself as "the essential guide for sustainable business."

Student-Faculty Research Collaboration Accepted for Publication
Biology faculty members Karen Francl and Christine Small recently co-authored a manuscript with RU graduate Clayton Faidley. "Salamander use of karst sinkholes in Montgomery County, Virginia" was recently accepted for publication in the Southeastern Naturalist. The yearlong study examined salamander activity in 25 sinkholes and three non-sinkhole habitats at RU's Selu Conservancy. Salamander captures during the spring and summer months were related to more than 20 habitat metrics, including tree canopy cover, soil moisture and presence of leaf litter. The authors found that salamanders were more commonly captured in forested sinkhole habitats than in field sinkholes or upland habitats. The lack of salamander captures in early successional habitats (fields and thickets) suggests that forest fragmentation and conversion may negatively impact salamander populations. More than 10 RU undergraduate biology students assisted in data collection throughout the study.
