Grace Wooldridge ’50 Honored With RU Scholarship
Grace Woolridge
In the early 1940s when Grace Wooldridge, a divorced mother of three, stepped onto the Radford campus, she had one thing in mind -- she wanted to be a teacher. She and her family sacrificed to make her dream become a reality. The Wooldridge children lived with their grandparents in Buchanan County while Wooldridge lived on campus. Following her first year as a full-time student, a principal in Buchanan County asked if she could please start teaching. In subsequent years, she returned to Radford during the summers, and in 1950 she received her undergraduate degree.

A teacher in Buchanan County’s Garden High School for 32 years, she dedicated herself to promoting in her students a sense of their own worth. Recently many of her former students, along with her friends and family members, returned the favor by establishing a scholarship in her name to help Buchanan County students attend Radford University. RU Professor To Be Featured on National Radio Program
Criminal justice professor Mary Atwell will discuss her latest book Wretched Sisters: Examining Gender and Capital Punishment today on the national radio program, The Bob Edwards Show.

The show is airing throughout the morning on XM satellite radio channel 133, and will air Thursday at 7 a.m. Atwell’s interview also will air on Bob Edwards Weekend and can be heard on Public Radio WVRU, 89.9 FM Saturday during the second hour of the 10 a.m.-noon show. Bob Edwards Weekend is distributed by Public Radio International and is broadcast on XM and on 100 public radio stations nationwide.

In Wretched Sisters, Atwell examines in detail the cases of the 11 women who have been sentenced to death for murder since the death penalty was reinstated in the United States in 1976. She explains common themes that reflect how the criminal justice system often defines crimes committed by women.

Before joining XM in 2004, Edwards hosted National Public Radio's (NPR) Morning Edition for more than 24 years, attracting more than 13 million listeners weekly. He joined NPR in 1974 and was co-host of NPR's evening news magazine, All Things Considered, until 1979 when he helped launch Morning Edition.

RU Sociology Students Create Survey
for Boys & Girls Clubs in Southwest Virginia

RU associate professor Jeanne Mekolichick and a group of sociology students have teamed up with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwestern Virginia to conduct a survey of the Clubs’ alumni in Roanoke and the New River Valley. The students began administering the survey online April 1.

The RU students will use the gathered information to help create resource development tools in an effort to promote the Boys & Girls Clubs in the region. One of the goals of the project is to establish a wall of fame honoring successful Boys & Girls Clubs alumni. The collaboration between the Clubs and RU will continue into the summer and fall as students conduct interviews with survey respondents to collect qualitative data to complement the quantitative survey data.

Cahan Wins Borelli Award
Recent Radford graduate and Loudon County native Andrew Cahan was recently awarded the 2008 Borelli Family Leadership award. This national award is sponsored by the Delta Chi Fraternity. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, held at least two offices in his local Delta Chi chapter, and be president of another organization on campus as well.

Cahan met the criteria by earning a 3.2 grade point average and served as secretary and president of Delta Chi. He was a member of RU’s ROTC Ranger Challenge team for four years and served as captain his senior year. He also served as ROTC Battalion Commander the spring semester of his senior year. Cahan was one of two people nationally to receive the 2008 award. He was awarded a $500 scholarship and a certificate of award from the Delta Chi Educational Foundation. Cahan graduated Spring of 2008 with a bachelors degree in computer science. Cahan is an Infantry Officer in the US Army and is stationed in Ft. Stewart, GA.

Nursing Exchange Student Enjoys her Experiences at RU
RU School of Nursing student Mariëlle Bast has been an exchange student at RU since the start of the spring semester. A student specializing in intensive clinical healthcare with critical care in the Netherlands, Bast said she came to RU to learn from the faculty in RU’s nursing program.

In Bast’s hometown, physical assessment is not a part of the bachelor’s degree curriculum, but is reserved for master’s level students. In RU’s program, Bast was able to learn about patient physical assessment. "At my university, we specialize in a certain field, so I have never had experience in obstetrics or pediatrics. Here I have the opportunity to observe in these courses and have learned a lot from this," she says.

According to nursing professor Maggie Bassett, Bast is one of only two exchange students to attend RU this academic year. Bast will return to the Netherlands in June and will graduate in July. "This has been a wonderful experience for me. I will remember this for the rest of my life and nobody and nothing can take that away from me."

Johnson Wins Prestigious National Internship
Leisha Johnson, a senior health education/health promotion major from Toano, has accepted a prestigious internship with the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). According to health education/health promotion professor Melissa Grim, SOPHE accepts only one undergraduate and one graduate student from a nationwide pool each term. "This was an extremely competitive process, as they interviewed about 20 candidates from a large pool of applicants," said Grim. "Leisha will help plan the national meeting, create health communications materials, and likely will go to some congressional hearings to write communications about health-related proceedings."

RU’s health education/health promotion program is part of the Department of Exercise, Sport and Health Education in the College of Education and Human Development.
