Radford Society Celebration Spotlights Friends' Cycle of Giving
Radford University welcomed its most generous supporters -- alumni, friends, faculty and staff -- on Saturday, Nov. 7 to the inaugural Radford Society Celebration Reception in the foyer and art gallery of the Covington Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. "This was a wonderful opportunity for us to say thank you to some of our most generous donors and friends," said Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle.
More than 100 guests from as far away as Texas and Georgia attended the event, which was sponsored by the RU Foundation. The reception was "red-tie" optional and featured the music of Dr. Stevan Jackson, Andrew Imhoff and Dustin Rakes. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

iLAB Research Center Receives Gift From Steelcase Inc.
Steelcase has donated $48,000 to be used in supplying furnishings and equipment for Radford University's new iLAB Research Center in Walker Hall. The company has a global reputation for excellence in service and contributions to service agencies including those in healthcare, education and government. To learn more, see the RU News Release.
Tickets on Sale Now for RU Madrigal Dinner
Radford University will present the annual holiday Madrigal Dinner Thursday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m., in Muse Banquet Hall. One of the most highly anticipated events of the visual and performing arts season, the evening includes music by the RU Madrigal Singers and other entertainment.
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Hurlburt Box Office. The office will be closed the week of Thanksgiving. Due to the popularity of the dinner, early ticket purchase is encouraged. Admission is $28 general public and $23 with RU I.D. A two-ticket limit applies to those purchasing with an I.D. To learn more, call the box office at (540) 831-5420.
Local Teams Answer National Challenge;
Global Innovation Tournament Underway
The clock is ticking. The 2009 Global Innovation Tournament (GIT), an international, apprentice-style competition for college and university students that seeks to promote innovation and problem-solving, has officially begun. Radford University is the host institution for more than 60 teams comprised of an estimated 300 students from colleges and universities throughout the region who are competing in the GIT. Their task is to create videos designed to encourage those most affected by today's global recession to build financial reserves and counter the perception that saving is difficult or unpleasant. Fourth Annual Ethics Panel Discussion Slated For RU
Radford University's Criminal Justice Department will host its fourth annual panel of interdisciplinary ethics scholars at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18 in Hurlburt Auditorium. The panel of ethics scholars will discuss Millennials and the Economic Downturn: Getting a Job in the 21st Century. RU's Criminal Justice Club is the event sponsor. Honors Students Present Revamped Nutcracker
Cracked: A Revamped Nutcracker For A Sinful Society will be presented at 8 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19 at the Albig Studio Theater in Peters Hall. The performance is co-directed by seniors Stacey Fernandez and Juliana Utz as their final capstone project for the Honors Academy. Fernandez and Utz have rewritten the classic tale, The Nutcracker, and transformed it into a contemporary evening length dance production. The cast consists of Radford University dance majors. Graduate Student of the Month
Each month, the College of Graduate and Professional Studies features a graduate student of the month on its Web site. For November, the spotlight is on Jason Lancaster, a master of fine arts candidate who is interested in pursuing an art instruction career within the college and university system. Lancaster is a member of the Graduate Student Council and serves as the vice president of the Graduate Art Student Association. RU Sustainability: "You Have the ABILITY!"
This week's edition of "You have the ABILITY!" is in commemoration of America Recycles Day on Sunday, Nov. 15 and offers tips on how to recycle.
- Mixed Paper-office paper, envelopes, newspapers, magazines, cereal/shoe boxes, soft back books
- Containers-glass, aluminum, bi-metal, plastics (#1 & #2 only)
- Cardboard-corrugated cardboard (2 outer layers with wavy inner layer), sorry no pizza boxes
- Recyclable item list- from batteries to books, tires to toner, there may be other items that we can recycle
- Off-campus students, faculty, & staff should contact their locality or check out Earth 911's website for more recycling info in their area

Radford Athletics Update
RU's 3-2 victory over Longwood in the NorPac third place match not only gave the Highlanders (11-10) their first winning season since 1996, but the 11 wins are the most since head coach Jeff Woods' 1991 squad won 17.
The Radford University Department of Athletics recently announced the creation of B-RadHoops with Coach Brad Greenberg, a weekly hour-long radio show featuring the 2009 Big South Coach of the Year.
Broadcast on Super Sports 101.7 FM and on the Internet, Greenberg will join the "Voice of the Highlanders" Rick Watson as well as assistant coaches, student-athletes and special guests each week to discuss the happenings in RU basketball.

Alumna Breaking Barriers in Male-Dominated Sport
Mimi Knoop began skateboarding at an early age, and the 2000 RU graduate now is a professional in a sport dominated by male competitors. As a pro, Knoop has co-founded a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping develop and promote "girl's skateboarding by empowering and encouraging young women's participation as well as increasing professional opportunities," she said. Student Work to be Published in Virginia Wildlife Magazine
Biology senior Justin Honaker's career goal is to be a pharmacist in his hometown of Grundy and serve the community in which he strongly believes. He says his love of community was fostered by a man with a story. In "Clinch River Anointing," to be published in the summer 2011 edition of Virginia Wildlife magazine, Honaker introduces readers to Jeff Owen, an avid angler and passionate conservationist. In his article, Honaker writes about the Clinch River and its impact on Owen's life. Read more at the College of Science and Technology Web site.
