RU Today Frequently Asked Questions
What is RU Today?
RU Today is a daily electronic newsletter created by the Radford University Office of University Relations to keep the campus community informed of RU news and events. The newsletter is sent Monday through Friday to faculty, staff and current students.
How often will I receive RU Today?
The Office of University Relations will e-mail RU Today each weekday throughout the year, except for university holidays.
Will I continue to receive other messages from the university?
RU Today replaces the several separate e-mails some people were receiving each day, while still assisting members of the campus community who want to communicate with a larger university audience. We plan to use this vehicle as the only e-mail communication you will receive from the university -- except for those messages that are audience-specific and require special attention. In those instances, you will receive an e-mail under the RU Today Extra banner.
What if I don't want to receive RU Today?
It is important for members of the RU community to receive messages from the university. Valuable information -- facility closings and human resource notices, among others -- will be included in RU Today.
Why can't I read the text or see the design in RU Today and why don't the links in the menu work?
Individual e-mail clients interpret html-enhanced messages in different ways, so the design of RU Today will vary from person to person, computer to computer. If you have problems viewing the RU Today e-mail, go to rutoday.radford.edu
What information will be published in RU Today?
RU Today will include sections on general campus information, notices for students, faculty and staff; RU in the news and higher education news; events and occasional profiles on university people and programs; among others. It will encompass all other individual campus wide e-mail messages except those that are audience-specific or require special attention.
If I don't have time to read all of RU Today, how can I quickly find the most important information?
RU Today has a two-column format. Most of the important messages will appear in the general information section at the top of the newsletter for easy reference.
When are submissions for RU Today due?
All submissions for RU Today must be received at least ten business days prior to inclusion in the daily e-mail and will be reviewed for timeliness and relevance to a university-wide audience. Submissions for RU Today may be e-mailed to rutoday@radford.edu or select the option “submit an item to RU Today” in the right column of the electronic newsletter.
Why didn't my submission appear in RU Today?
All submissions must meet the e-newsletter's guidelines for publication as well as be timely and relevant for a university-wide audience. E-mail specific questions and submissions to rutoday@radford.edu
Why don't some of the links in the “RU in the News” and “Higher Ed News” sections work?
Certain news sites make their stories available for a limited time while others require a subscription, sometimes free, in order to access the material. If you have a question about a news story, send e-mail to rutoday@radford.edu.
Why can't I choose which sections of RU Today I want to receive?
The information provided in RU Today offers something for all readers. The format allows readers to quickly find those sections they wish to read.
Why can't I choose how often I want to receive RU Today?
It is important for members of the RU community to receive messages from the university throughout the week. Valuable information -- facility closings, traffic updates and human resource notices, among others -- will be included in RU Today.
Why wasn't my submission selected as the top story?
Top stories are typically messages from the university administration, or events and programs that have a university-wide appeal such as commencement or convocation.
Why wasn't the media article that featured my school or professor included in RU Today?
RU Today tries to highlight articles and news stories that feature a variety of university people and resources. Most of the articles selected come from local, regional and national media outlets that are found via major search engines. We welcome members of the campus community to submit news items for consideration to rutoday@radford.edu.
How do you decide which articles to feature in “RU in the News?”
When selecting news stories we choose items that prominently feature Radford University or a member of the university community and may be of interest to a broad range of our reading audience. We do not censor stories based on topic or opinion, but will leave out articles that duplicate stories we've already featured.
Why can't my submission appear in RU Today more than two times?
Because it is a weekday publication, our goal is to keep the content fresh and engaging. RU Today is designed to show the range of programs, events and services available to the campus community on any given day.
What criteria do you use to decide which submissions will appear in RU Today?
Items (e.g., news, events, programs) considered for publication in RU Today must be sanctioned by the university and have a university-wide appeal. News and events should be free, open to the public and important to the university administration and its goals. Should registration and/or a fee be involved, the event or news item will be considered if it is of general interest to a broad segment of the university community. Submissions should be sent to rutoday@radford.edu a minimum of 10 business days before it can be posted.
Generally, RU Today will be used to promote events in order that the university community will be aware of opportunities for participation. In rare instances, RU Today will provide after the fact reporting of an event. Generally, these events will be those of campus-wide interest and importance, such as commencement, homecoming and major presidential speeches.
RU Today will avoid repetition of stories. Stories will be promoted prior to the event and possibly the day of the event. Multiple postings will be avoided in order to keep RU Today current and useful to the campus community.
Items or events that involve a financial benefit to individuals or organizations other than the university will not be accepted.
Why are some messages sent separate from RU Today and others are not?
On occasion when warranted by breaking news -- and only at the direction of the president, provost or rector of the university's board of visitors -- the Office of University Relations will issue an RU Today Extra, a special edition of the newsletter that comes separate from and later in the day than RU Today. This extra issue will contain news so timely that it cannot be held until the next issue of RU Today.
