Covington Center Opening Events Announced
Radford University's fifth president, Douglas Covington, and his late wife, Beatrice, were avid and contributing supporters of the arts at RU and frequently talked with pride and affection about the university's College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Doug and Bea Covington On Saturday, Nov. 15, the Covingtons' legacy continues as the $22.5 million Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts opens. "I felt such great emotion when I was told that the new performing arts building would be named in honor of Bea and myself," said Dr. Covington.

Located at the corner of East Main and Jefferson Streets in Radford, the center includes a 350-seat performance hall, rehearsal rooms, teaching studios, a music media center and an art gallery. It is the first new academic building on campus since 2000, when the Waldron College of Health and Human Services was completed.

RU President Penelope W. Kyle said, "This wonderful building will stand as a lasting tribute to Dr. Covington and his wife, Bea. It reflects the love and esteem that the university and surrounding community have for the Covingtons." To learn more, see the RU News Release.

Diversity Week Celebration in Full Swing at RU
Diversity Week is underway at Radford University with a variety of events focused on creating awareness of different cultures and building community. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

Meet the Coaches Reception Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2
The Radford University New River Valley Alumni and Friends Chapter invites Highlander Fans to a "Meet the Coaches Reception" Thursday, Oct. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The River Company Restaurant and Brewery in Fairlawn.

Highlander Sports Update
Jill Johnson has joined Radford University as the Associate Athletic Director for External Operations. Johnson's role at Radford will be to implement a corporate sponsorship and marketing program for the athletic department, as well as to oversee the day-to-day operation of Radford's athletic marketing, promotions, and season ticket sales for men's and women's basketball. She will also assume the duties of Radford's Senior Women's Administrator for athletics. For more, see the RU Sports Information Release.

The undefeated RU women's soccer team (5-0-2), fresh off a 3-0 win over Eastern Kentucky last week, will host Presbyterian College in a Big South Conference matchup this Saturday at 7 p.m. The men's soccer team takes on non-conference foe Appalachian State earlier Saturday, at 1 p.m., at Cupp Stadium. Senior midfielder Stephanie McLamb and freshman back Lynsey Daughtrey of the RU women's field hockey team have been named NorPac Co-Offensive and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Both played key roles in the Highlanders' win over Stanford last week and their strong showing against defending national champ UNC. RU Grad Named Among 2008 Catalyst Top 25 Entrepreneurs
On October 2, RU graduate Brian Patrick Cork '84 will be honored as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Atlanta when he receives one of Catalyst Magazine's Top 25 Entrepreneurs & One to Watch awards during a premier event showcasing Atlanta's emerging businesses. This marks the second year in a row Cork has been named a top entrepreneur by Catalyst.

Cork's company, brian cork Human Capital, helps top executives find best-of-class talent and manages transition with Fortune 50 companies. Cork was recently recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as a Top Most Influential Entrepreneur in the Southeast in the services category. He will be the keynote speaker for the Radford University SunTrust Distinguished Speaker Series on Tuesday, Oct. 28. To learn more, visit Catalyst Magazine or Cork's business site.

RU Student Is Recipient of Distinguished Collegian Award
Nana "T-Chee" Kum, an RU student and member of the Theta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, was recently named a recipient of one of three national Distinguished Collegian Awards by the Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc.

Nana Kum The Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc., is a nonprofit charitable arm of Alpha Phi Alpha. The foundation focuses on scholarships, programs, training and development of the membership.

Kum recently received a medallion at the General Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha in Kansas City. He will also be featured in an upcoming issue of the fraternity's magazine and the nation's second oldest African-American publication still in existence, The Sphinx.

"The Radford University community, Greek Life and the National Pan-Hellenic Council are very proud of the accomplishments of T-Chee," says Steve Leist, RU's coordinator of student activities-Greek Life. "He is an outstanding student and university leader. I look forward to continuing to work with T-Chee as he assumes the presidency of the Theta Iota chapter."
